Toyota TRD Off-Road "Pro" type Black out Grill

Posted by David S. Knoxville, Tn. on Mar 2nd 2020

To start, I usually don't bother to write reviews for purchased products since I tend to be overly critical and look for issues beyond what most people call issues. However, this time I will make an exception, not to be critical, but to take the time to write anything at all - this product is exceptional for it's robust and bold construction and I looked at quite a few offerings from different vendors before I decided on the "MotoGenic" unit mostly because I wanted a Front Grill center section only and didn't want to pay more for the Black out surrounding Bezel since my TRD O/R is Silver and I wanted the contrast of the surrounding Silver Bezel to remain the factory color with the Black-out Grill in the middle. To Review: The MotoGenic Grill it arrived in a very reasonable time from across the country and was packed very well for a molded plastic piece --- NO shipping damage, not even a nick ! Very good so far. As far as installation, it was more difficult to REMOVE the OEM Toyota PlastiChrome Grill and I broke one Tab off during that process. No instructions come with this replacement but their are plenty of YouTube videos out there which thoroughly cover that process. Installing the MotoGenic Grill was very easy, just snaps in place, fits perfectly and [4] screws secure the "Toyota" Logo separate plastic piece. My TRD O/R is a 2017 model so the Cruise Control proximity sensor is not part of this installation but I assume it would be just as easily reinstalled behind the separate "Garnish" plastic piece (included) under the "Toyota" Logo piece. Overall, "it was a snap" only requiring 10mm ratchet/socket, a small flat blade screwdriver and a #2 Phillips screwdriver to remove the OEM Grill and install the MotoGenic product. Installing the lighting was a different story though. The Polarity specific LED lighting modules come plugged into a prefabricated harness with a +/- bare wire end. The modules snap into specific "honeycombs" of the grill. When I say specific I mean that the grill honeycomb sizes only allow you to install them starting from above the "T" in Toyota or one to the right from there. In any case, there are [4] LED's with connectors on the harness and the spots where they fit on the grill only allow them a certain locations above the "Toyota" logo which, if you use all four LED's lights will offset them to the right or left. I balanced them to the center with the addition of a fifth LED I took off a second harness I purchased to have "back-up/extra" lights for the future should one of them go bad and used wire clips to connect them to the main harness. After that, I fabricated a relay controlled "on/off" circuit which took it's trigger signal to the relay from the Red Wire on the DRL plug next to the battery and a fuse protected 12v source directly from the truck battery. Fabricating my wiring and control circuit too a couple hours but it blends right in with all the other Toyota OEM wiring under the hood and looks like it was a "dealer option" -- very professional / slick job (read: self-approval here) ----- Overall, the Motogenic center Grill insert appears to be a well built product, fits very well and looks great not to mention what I found to be a very reasonable price point ! I would buy again or recommend this to a friend - DxS

The grill looks good and fits well. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that the screws they send you to attach the letter plate do not fit. They are too small. It wasn't a big deal because I had several screws left over from the removal of my original grill and those screws were the perfect size to hold the plate on.
